Timing Of Hardware Selection & Specification

Hardware ties in to many surrounding details. The earlier on in a project it is discussed, the better. Typically a schedule can begin as soon as a floor plan with numbered doors exists. Often, decisions are made early on that limit or dictate hardware selections. By discussing hardware early on, inadvertent limitations can be avoided.

Creating A Hardware Budget

Creating a budget number for hardware prior to working out details and making a selection can be difficult, but not impossible. If a lump sum, we suggest consulting with a distributor on the overall scope and product range you will be looking at to assign an appropriate figure.

Online Research

Online research should be done to help guide intent and aesthetic preferences, but not to select items for generating a specific spec. Luxury and entry level products tend to be merchandised similarly online, which can lead to their pairing on projects even when they are vastly different in quality and price point. Finished metal tones do not pick up well in digital imagery and can lead to misconception of the appearance on a finished item.

Coordinating A Showroom Visit/Selection Meeting

When coordinating a showroom visit or selection meeting on site or over the phone, the more pre-planning that can be done the better. Providing floor plans, inspiration images, budget, etc. allows your distributor to prepare fully and puts the responsibility on them to make sure everything needed is selected. We suggest starting broadly (typical interior knob/lever, pocket door trim, etc.) and then focusing down (front door, door stops, hinges, secondary entries, etc.). If the homeowner will be present and an active member of the selection process, share this ahead of time, along with what should or should not be discussed. Providing peripheral specs (lighting, plumbing, etc.) can help to guide the direction the client is going. Pictures are best, descriptions are less helpful. A contemporary piece in a traditional finish changes the look dramatically and is difficult to describe.

Things To Consider

When considering a piece of hardware keep in mind the following:

  • Form

  • Function

  • Comfort

  • Reliability of application (just because something can be done, does not mean it should be done)

Encompassing Decisions With Substantial Effect On Pricing

The following attributes all have an impact on why a project prices out the way it does.

  • Exotic finish selections (silver, gold, white metals with very dark patinas)

  • Door weight and size

  • “Abnormal” openings

  • Hinge finials

  • Pocket door functions

  • Manufacturing process

  • Country of manufacture

  • Quality of finishing (corners, flats, radiuses, etc. Not plating)
